Let's take a look at the history of the cabinet, or "buffet" in French. Originally, the term "buffet" referred to a table on which food was displayed at banquets or large receptions. Over time, the sideboards evolved into more permanent storage and display units. In the 18th century, sideboards were large solid wood pieces of furniture used to store the crockery, glassware and precious objects of noble families. Then, in the 19th century, the sideboard spread to middle-class homes, adopting simpler, more functional designs. In the 20th century, it was transformed into a low piece of furniture, losing its upper section as we know it today.
But what difference with an enfilade? An enfilade is a longer, lower piece of storage furniture. They are often characterized by an horizontal structure and a linear arrangement of drawers and doors. They offer greater storage space than sideboards, with a longer, stretched aesthetic, but are intended for larger spaces.
